Principal's Message: 9/5/22

Dear OHS Families,

I hope the first week of school went well for your child(ren)!  It is a long week, especially for our youngest students, and there was a good deal of fatigue setting in by mid-week.  Though tired, I hope you heard positive reports of establishing relationships in the classroom with peers and staff.

CARES Assemblies

We had our first CARES Assemblies of the year on Tuesday morning.  The assemblies were our first in-person ones since before the pandemic, so it was a first for our kindergarten, grade 1, and even grade 2 students.  We read the book Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller and then brainstormed what it looks like and sounds like to be kind.  Students provided lots of ideas including sharing with friends, helping a friend to the nurse, providing help even when someone does not ask, saying “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” to name a few.  We then reviewed the expectations for different shared spaces in our school: the hallways, lunchroom, and bathrooms.  We had half the school at each assembly and it was a treat to be together.

Thank you, PTA!

Our start of the year has been brightened thanks to the PTA. We have new recess equipment and games, outdoor recess bins for storage, classroom rugs, OHS welcome rug, and classroom furniture and more thanks to our generous PTA.  There was a food truck for staff to end last week and a staff room that is being made more relaxing and inviting.  Thank you for your helping enhance the experiences for students and bring some joy to staff as they start up the year. It is greatly appreciated!

Chromebook Insurance

Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students have their Chromebooks for the year now and I wanted to write to encourage you to take out the insurance on the device. Currently, the system is not open for purchasing the insurance but a message will be coming out from the district in the next week or so letting you know the insurance is now available.  Here are the directions provided for signing up for the insurance for when it becomes available in IC.

Open House

This year Open House is back in person!  It will be in the evening of Wednesday, September 14th from 6:30-7:30 pm.  We will start off directly in the classrooms at 6:30 with a welcome video from me and then a presentation from the teacher.  If you have multiple children at OHS, you will be able to shift to another classroom at around 7:00 to see the room and meet the teacher.   The evening is meant to be a chance to see the classroom, learn about what the year will be like for your child, and meet the teacher.  It is not appropriate to speak specifically about your child with the teacher that evening as there will be many families and privacy will be a concern.  Feel free to reach out to the teacher at a different time for specific information about your individual child.  Looking forward to a fun night together.

STAR Testing Begins 9/12

We will begin STAR testing starting Monday, September 12th.  STAR data in Reading and Math is used as one of our screening tools and is administered three times per year.  Grades 1-5 will be taking the STAR tests on Chromebooks or in the computer lab for this administration.  K students do not take STAR Early Literacy until January.  Once testing is complete, results of the testing will be available on Infinite Campus to families.

I hope you enjoy the long, Labor Day weekend!
