Principal's Message: 5/25/20

Dear OHS Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy.

I am having trouble believing Memorial Day is here.  Time has been strange these last weeks and months.  As we approach the last weeks of school, there are many end-of-year items about which to update you.

Kindergarten Orientation:

Our newest Otters were supposed to visit our school last month.  Instead, this morning we are sending out a pre-recorded video of the orientation information and on Thursday we will have two question-and-answer sessions via Zoom.  Our school team, along with next year’s PTA presidents, Jennifer Kelley and Catherine Yarmosh, participated in welcoming the families of students starting kindergarten in the fall.

Summer Math:

Please see a note from Mrs. Greer below in today’s Flash.  She has information about the summer math packets.  We will print out a copy of the packet for you if you do not have access to a printer.  Please see below for information on how to request one.

Plan for Pick Up of Student Belongings from School and Return of School Materials:

The district has developed a plan for returning student belongings to families and collecting school materials from families. The window for the pick-up/drop-off will be from June 11th- June 17th.  I will be sending out a schedule for the specific window for your child(ren)’s class(es) soon.

One key thing to note: if you borrowed a device from the district, only fifth graders and students moving away from our district need to return them.  There are also certain cases when fifth graders may hold on to devices for the summer (ie. If participating in summer school).

Here are some of the specifics from the district about pick up/drop off:

  • Students will be asked to return any items they borrowed from Fairfield Public Schools, aside from technology (library books, classroom books/materials, etc.)
  • Families with multiple children will use the oldest student’s grade level pickup/drop off day
  • There will be clearly designated procedures/markings to ensure compliance with Health Department requirements for safe practice for all involved – staff, students, parents
  • IT Department requests all technology be returned from grade 5 and students not returning to school the following year
  • Art projects should be returned to grade five students ONLY; other students’ items will be distributed next year
  • Dates for material pick up are June 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17. 5th grade will be the last date so that they can return devices on the same day.
  • Principal will set the schedule and communicate with parents for 1 hr. per class
  • Cars will drive up and pick-up will happen one car at a time.  All this will be done outside and no one will enter the schools
  • A certified staff member will be present to facilitate pick up and drop off
  • Non-controlled medications will be returned during this pick-up time.  For controlled medications, the nurse will set up a separate pick-up time with families
  • Orchestra and band instruments will be dropped off at FWHS on a scheduled day and communicated by that department
  • Sheet music will be dropped off at the Elementary School when other items are returned

5th Grade Moving Up Celebrations:

Though this is a tough year for end-of-year celebrations, we will be having several special components to celebrate our wonderful fifth grade class.

The first will be a recorded Moving Up Ceremony.  OHS staff have been working with Fifth Grade Committee parents to plan a special pre-recorded Moving Up Ceremony.  The recording will feature the fifth grade students and comprise many of the components we typically have when we are together for a Moving Up Ceremony.  The release date for this video is still to be determined but will likely be just a few days before the end of school.

Just prior to the release of the ceremony, fifth graders will have the Moving Up bulletin, Moving Up certificate, and possibly some other goodies delivered to their doors.

The third special part of celebrating our fifth graders will be an OHS Parade of 5th Graders! Our fifth graders will parade in cars through the parking lot, waving to staff members.  This will happen on Wednesday, June 10th at 10:30 am.

See below some specifics from the district about how the parade will be conducted:

  • Families may decorate their cars in celebration of their child.
  • Cars will form a line at the parking lot entrance and follow the bus lanes through the lot. Families cannot walk up to the school to participate. Even families who are normally walkers must come through in a car.
  • One car per family. No one besides staff will be in the front entrance to cheer students.
  • Police will be on hand to direct traffic.
  • No one will get out of his or her car. Cars will not stop and will simply follow the parking lot route. Neighborhood families will not congregate on lawns to cheer on students in parade
  • Staff will follow social distancing regulations, wear masks, and stay six feet apart from others.  Staff will be at the front entrance area to cheer on the students.  Nothing will be passed out to the students during the parade.
  • Student certificates will be delivered to families on a later date

While this will be different from past years, I am very happy we will have several ways to celebrate our fifth graders and their time at OHS.

I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day.

Thinking about you,

David

Summer Math

During the summer, it is important for your student to keep up with mathematical thinking skills to be prepared for the next grade.  There are many ways to achieve this review/practice, one way is to complete a summer math packet.  Packets for all students, grade kindergarten through fifth, are available through the Fairfield Public Schools web site and the Osborn Hill School web site under Math Links.

https://www.fairfieldschools.org/academics/subjects/math

A copy of the summer math packet can be printed for families upon request.  Please contact Mrs. Budlowski via email at tbudlowski@faifieldschols.org by June 5th in order for the packet to be included with any materials you are picking up at school.

We thank you for your support as you continue to encourage your child’s mathematical growth over the summer months.  Your positive attitude towards mathematics is beneficial in growing young mathematicians!
