Principal's Message: 5/24/21

Dear OHS Families,

The weather has been beautiful this spring and made for some lovely first days of being able to be outside without masks.

New Mask Guidelines for Outside

This past week the district sent out new guidelines for mask wearing on school grounds.  When outside, masks do not need to be worn by students or adults.  Of course, it is not mandatory that masks be removed when outside. It is up to the student and his/her family to decide. Inside the school and on the bus masks will continue to be required.  Here is the key information from the district communication:

Indoors:  Wearing masks is required inside all school buildings for all students and staff, as well as on school buses.  Masks must be worn when entering or exiting a school building.  Nonessential visitors and volunteers are still not permitted in school buildings.

Outdoors:  No masks are required outdoors on school grounds, as long as 6 foot social distancing is maintained.  This applies to all students, staff, (for recess, PE, or any outside lesson or activity), as well as to parents/guardians (for drop off/pickup). Current class cohorts must be maintained to limit contact tracing and quarantining.

District School Climate Survey Due Friday

Your voice matters! Our School Climate Survey for Parents/Guardians is open until Friday, May 28 at 4:00 pm.  Please access the survey here:  Parent/Guardian Climate Survey 2020-2021. You may fill it out for each child in your family if the experiences have been different.  Thank you for taking the time to complete this to help us improve as a school and district.

Final Lockdown Drill for the Year

This Thursday we will have our last lockdown drill of the year.  Our students and staff have been doing a wonderful job this year during our drills and we continue to get positive feedback from the observing police officers. I will send out a quick note to everyone when the drill is complete to let you know how it goes.

OHS Field Days

We’re excited to be able to hold Field Day this year! Mr. Marko has been planning some activities and stations for the event.  Though it will be different in a variety of ways from past field days, it will be an exciting event that I am happy we can hold.

This year, Field Day will spread across two school days with grades K, 1, and 2 on June 7th and grades 3, 4, and 5 on June 8th.  Please send your student(s) in wearing OHS spirit wear and sunscreen on the day of their event.

Fifth Grade Moving Up Save the Date

Fifth grade OHS in-school and RLA families, please save the date of June 11th (and rain date of June 14 th) for our Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony.  We will be having the event outside in the morning at 9:45.  It will be a chance for us to come together with lawn chairs or blankets and celebrate our wonderful group of fifth graders. Two family members per fifth grader will be allowed at the event.

Collection of School Devices

We will be collecting all school devices that have been lent out over the past year on Tuesday, June 15th.  If your child(ren) borrowed a device from the district (Chromebook or Kajeets internet wifi), please send it to school with your child on the 15th along with the power cable.  You are welcome to send it in sooner than the 15th if you no longer need it.  Thank you!

Reminder: Emergency Broadband Benefit

A few weeks ago, the district sent out information about a program starting on May 12 developed by the Federal Communications Commission to help families and households afford internet service during the pandemic.  I want to be sure you received the information.  The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a discount of up to $50 per month toward internet service for eligible households.  Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Here is information on the district site: https://www.fairfieldschools.org/ebb. You can learn more about the benefit, including eligibility and enrollment information, by visiting www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit, or by calling 833-511-0311.

I hope you enjoy the Memorial Day weekend ahead.
