Principal's Message: 5/23/22

Dear OHS Families,

We had a busy week that just passed with the fifth grade heading to Fairfield Museum and Chelsea Piers and our kindergarteners visiting a farm. This coming week, second graders will be heading to Mill Hollow Pond. It is a treat to return to field trips!

Orchestra and Band Concert

Also this coming week, on Tuesday we return to an in-person concert by our fourth and fifth grade orchestra and our fifth grade band.  Mrs. Trombley and Ms. DiMeglio have been working hard to prepare our students for this big day when they can perform for other students in the morning and then for family in the evening.  I am proud of the effort our students have put forth in learning their instruments and the music for the concert.  It is an amazing difference listening to before-school rehearsals from the beginning of the year to now.  We are in for a treat on Tuesday.

OHS Superintendent Award Recipient

At the same time as the concert on Tuesday night, the superintendent awards will be presented in front of the Board of Ed.  The Superintendent Award recognizes one student from the graduating class of each elementary school, middle school, and high school in town for their work in and out of school building up the community. We had many strong candidates in the fifth grade for the award and this year Osborn Hill’s recipient will be Shayla Denton.  Shayla is a wonderful example of what this award represents through her daily kindness at school and the greater community.  Congratulations to Shayla and her family!

Field Day

On Thursday of this week, we will have our annual Field Day with events and fun for each grade level.  The day is organized by having each grade level outside for about 75 minutes. During the 75 minutes, students will cycle through stations, including a giant inflatable slide and obstacle course.  The last few minutes will be dedicated to popsicles and working on a giant chalk mural on the blacktop.  Big thanks to the PTA for the inflatables and Mr. Marko for organizing the day.

Please have your child wear sunscreen and bring a labeled water bottle to prepare for the day on Thursday, May 26th (Raindate: Friday, May 27th).  Here are the start times for each grade level.  You are welcome to stop by to see your child(ren)’s field day during their time:

  • 9:00 – Kindergarten
  • 10:00 – Grade 1
  • 11:00 – Grade 2
  • 12:00 – Grade 3
  • 1:00 – Grade 5
  • 2:00 – Grade 4

Memorial Day Weekend and Stepping into June

I hope you enjoy the extra-long upcoming Memorial Day weekend!  Students are not in school on Monday May 30th for the holiday or Tuesday, May 31st because of a staff training day.  I hope you enjoy the time!

When we come back from the long weekend, the fifth grade will be visiting Fairfield Woods Middle School while students in K-4 will be meeting with staff from the public library to talk about summer reading opportunities through the library.

The following weekend, on June 4th, we move into the June Jam!  This will be a fun way to make up for missing the Harvest Faire in the fall.  I am looking forward to the big event and already appreciating all the work by the leaders of the event and all PTA members working to organize and make the day possible.

Have a great week ahead!
