Principal's Message: 12/14/20

Dear OHS Families,

With Hanukkah in full swing now and Christmas and Kwanzaa quickly approaching, the holiday season is certainly upon us.  This week’s update includes many holiday-related updates.  I hope you all enjoy this special time of year.

OHS Holiday Drive Donations Reminder – Due December 16th

As I shared last week, we are currently accepting gift card donations as part of our OHS Holiday Drive to go to members of our community currently struggling financially.  Our psychologists, Audra Dressler and Lindsay Feducia, are now collecting gift cards until this Wednesday, December 16th.  Donations can be sent to the main office marked “OHS Holiday Drive.”  Please see the attached letter for specific information.

Gift Card Requests – Due Today

If your family is facing financial stress or hardship, we invite you to request gift cards by using the attached form or by calling Audra Dressler or Lindsay Feducia at (203)255-8340 by today, December 14, 2020.  All requests will be kept confidential to Audra, Lindsay, and me.

Fully Remote Early Dismissal Day - December 23rd

As a reminder, the day before the December break, December 23rd, will be a fully-remote early-dismissal day. All students will learn remotely from home.  Teachers will send out schedules to follow for the day prior to the 23rd

Holiday Sing-Along – December 23rd

In typical years, our school comes together the day before the December break for a Holiday Sing-Along in the APR.  While we cannot come together in person these days, Mrs. Haskitt has been working with all the grade levels to put together a Sing-Along we can all enjoy simultaneously on December 23rd.  It will be on the fully-remote early-dismissal day just prior to break.  More information will come from me and your child(ren)’s teacher(s) about how to attend.

Big thanks to Mrs. Haskitt for her work in making this possible.  Also thanks to Mr. Haskitt for his assistance with it as well.  I am looking forward to the event!

New Elementary Schedule - Starting January 19th

At this past Tuesday’s Board of Ed meeting, the superintendent presented the new schedule for elementary schools that will be starting on January 19th.  Here is a letter from Mr. Cummings with an overview and links.  The purpose of the change is to allow us to return to 100% capacity while avoiding some of the trickier safety portions of the day (including lunch and certain specials).  The schedule includes a typical arrival time of 8:45 and then students going home at 1:00 pm for lunch, specials, and other synchronous and asynchronous work.

For families who opt to move their child(ren) to fully remote, students will be staying with their current teachers and live-stream into the classroom for portions of the day.  If you would like to opt your child(ren) into fully remote, simply send me an email and we will make sure that starts on January 19th.

Happy Hanukkah and good tidings for the coming weeks,

David
