Principal's Message: 1/4/21

Dear OHS Families,

2021 is here!  I hope this break has been a positive one for you and your families, though I am sure different from what winter break typically looks like.  My family had a nice, low-key time.  I enjoyed disconnecting from email for some of the days and focusing on family.

Just prior to the break, we had our all-school Holiday Sing-Along.  I want to say a big thank you to our music teacher Mrs. Laura Haskitt, who along with her husband, Mr. Scott Haskitt, helped make the Sing-Along keep its great feel.  She found some creative ways to make the online experience as engaging as possible with dance moves, rhythm, and fifth graders leading the songs.  It took lots of planning and time. It was a big gift to our community! Thank you, Laura and Scott!

As we return to school now, we are quickly approaching the new elementary schedule starting on January 19thHere is the letter from Superintendent Mike Cummings with an overview and informational links.  The purpose of the change is to allow us to return to 100% capacity while avoiding some of the trickier safety portions of the day (including lunch and certain specials).  The schedule includes a typical arrival time of 8:45 and then students going home at 1:00 pm for lunch, specials, and other synchronous and asynchronous work.

In preparation for the 19th, Mr. Bill and Mr. Lou were very busy over the break moving all the tables, desks, and chairs necessary into each classroom to accommodate the 100% capacity.  Big thanks to both of them taking on this important task.

Until the 19th, students will remain in their hybrid seating arrangements with a minimum of six-foot spacing.  On the 19th, classes will need to use all the seating in the rooms and spacing will shift to a minimum of three feet with the addition of transparent tri-fold partitions for each student.

For families who opt to move their child(ren) to fully remote, students will be staying with their current teachers and live-stream into the classroom for portions of the day.  If you would like to opt your child(ren) into fully remote, simply send me an email and we will make sure that starts on January 19th.

I am looking forward to 2021 with all of you and wish you the best for the coming year.  I appreciate our community and all of you who do so much for our students.

David
