Principal's Message: 1/9/23

Dear OHS Families,

Happy start to 2023 to all of you!  I hope you enjoyed the school break and holidays.

This coming week, we have an early dismissal Friday for teacher professional development leading into the long Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.

OHS Safety Patrol

We have our Safety Patrol starting up today at dismissal time.  The Safety Patrol is made up of members of our fifth grade CARES Council and they will be stationed at our pickup loops and bus loading area to help see students off safely in the afternoon.  The team has been preparing for this responsibility and you will see them in their yellow sashes helping out.  Thanks to Patty Day, Audra Dressler, and Lindsay Feducia-Martin for organizing this group.

Reminder to Charge Chromebooks

This week we start our January STAR testing and students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be using their Chromebooks for the testing.  Please help your students in those grades remember to charge so they are ready each day.

Devices from Home

I have been hearing about some disruptions in classrooms this past week as students have come back to school with some new devices after the holidays.  The primary issue has been related to smart watches, like Gizmos, which allow for communication with people outside of school.  If devices are proving distracting for students, the teacher may ask the student to keep the device in their backpacks during the day. Our School Handbook has information about devices from home on page 40. Thanks for your support and understanding with this.

Office Staffing Update

As you may know, our former morning clerk, Cathy Taylor, has transitioned to working as a paraeducator in KJ. Abby Beatty is shifting to the morning clerical position, so she will be the point person for attendance confirmation.

I am happy to report we welcomed Donna Callahan to the afternoon clerical position this past week.  Donna worked for years as a paraeducator at OHS.  It is great to have Donna back with us and I know you will enjoy meeting her.

Have a great week and enjoy the long weekend ahead,

David
