Principal's Message: 11/18/19

Dear OHS Families,

This past week was short but busy!

Veterans Day

The week started with our all-school Veterans Day assembly.  Due to the rain, we moved the event inside to our APR.  We had eight veteran guests, including several family members of our students and staff.  Tom Quinn, Commander of American Legion 143 presented for a few minutes and answered questions from students.  Our students asked thoughtful questions and our veteran guests offered great insight.  To show our thanks and appreciation to the veterans and their service to the country, our students offered songs and hand-made flags with notes of thanks on the back.  It was a special gathering.

Historic Cookbook

One of the veterans in attendance, the great-grandfather of an OHS student, brought a family member who was a student here the first year OHS opened in 1957.  The staff and PTA made a cookbook that year and the student brought it in for us to see.  As one of the opening pages, they offer a “Recipe for a Good School,” which I will include below.

World Kindness Day

On Tuesday, blue flooded our school as students dressed in celebration of World Kindness Day.  Karla Connors and Missy McGuire, with help from their OHS students, hung signs to inspire kindness.  These banners add positivity and beauty to our halls.  We will keep them up through Thanksgiving.

Arrival Time Reminder

I have heard there is some confusion about the time school starts.  Students are expected to be in school by the time of our second bell in the morning at 8:55.  Our staff members assigned to the entrance doors closest to the drop-off loop typically stay a few extra minutes to bring in students running a few minutes late.  If the door is already closed when your child arrives, you can always bring your child to the front door.  Thanks for doing your best to get students to school on time.

Leading Up to Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is around the corner and our can collection for the Turkey Trot is finishing up at the end of this week.  I know our classes are very invested in bringing in items to donate. Thank you for your efforts in supporting this worthy collection.

Our annual Turkey Trot will be Tuesday, 11/26, before school.  The raindate is Wednesday, 11/27. This is a great opportunity for our students to trot around the back field under the direction of Mr. Marko.

Thanksgiving is certainly an appropriate time of year to share my appreciation for the wonderful community we have here at OHS.  Our community members are a special group of students, educators, and families, who care a great deal about one another and bring out the best in each other.  I feel very lucky each day to be a part of this special community.

With appreciation,

David
