Principal's Message: 10/26/20

Dear OHS Families,

This has certainly been an unexpected and stressful week for our community as the district was forced to postpone the plan to transition to full days of school at the elementary level due to the increased number of cases in Fairfield as tracked by the state.  I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe. Safety continues to be our number one priority at school and we have been doing our very best to make school as safe as possible for our students and community.

Mask Wearing on School Grounds Reminder

I think overall our community has been extremely cognizant and diligent about wearing masks on school grounds.  As our town’s rates have increased it becomes even more urgent that all people wear masks.  Please be sure anyone who is picking up your child(ren) or on school grounds for other reasons knows that masks are required.  Thank you for your help with this.

LLC Special Cancelled This Week (10/26-10/30)

Each week students in kindergarten through fourth grade have a synchronous lesson with our library media specialist, Mrs. Kosh. This week, however, from October 26 through October 30, LLC special will be cancelled.  All other specials area classes will continue (e.g.: music, art, physical education). The LLC special will return to regular programming during the week of November 2 as indicated in your child’s schedule. Thank you for your flexibility as Mrs. Kosh works with the other library media specialists across the district to help us plan for the future full reopening of schools.

Big Book Fair Thank You

This year’s Scholastic Book Fair was like no other we have had in the past.  Tara Van Horne and Jane Loh organized the last two weeks to creatively energize our community.  I want to thank Tara and Jane for all their efforts in making the most of the current challenges and persisting through the many obstacles associated with the current times.

I also want to thank all the staff members who supported the book fair this year.  Our LMS, Mrs. Kosh, created and maintained the special website that housed our special activities in honor of the book fair. Our EPF, Mrs. Galgano, organized the many mystery readers and clues that added to the daily fun. We also had many staff members who took the time to be mystery readers and “time travelers” readers. I appreciate all the work put into drumming up some energy and positivity around the book fair.  It was a lovely gift to our school.

Halloween Reminder – 10/30

Halloween comes to OHS on Friday, October 30th

Students in the hybrid model are invited to wear their costume to school, without the Halloween mask, allowing for the face mask to be worn.  In considering costumes, please think about costumes that will allow students the ability to manage on their own for the bathroom and will be comfortable enough for the full cohort time.

Students in the Remote Learning Academy should refer to directions from their teachers about costume specifics.

For anyone who chooses not to wear a costume, which is completely fine, I would encourage the wearing of school colors, spirit wear, or Halloween colors.

November 2nd and 3rd – PD Days

Next week, Monday (11/2) and Tuesday (11/3) are professional development days for teachers.  There will be no school for students (both hybrid model and RLA) on those days.  Please remember to vote on November 3rd

Week of November 9th

With the postponement of the return to full days, the week of November 9th will follow the normal hybrid schedule.  Please remember there is no school Wednesday (11/11) of that week in honor of Veterans Day.

Have a good week ahead!

David
